About TEN Youths

The youth section of the club are an enthusiastic bunch, overseen by our group of British Cycling qualified coaches. The club reached the high standard of British Cycling clubmark accreditation meaning we are a trusted club to deliver top quality and safe coaching sessions.

The aim is to provide a friendly and safe environment for young riders, to develop their love for cycling in a fun and exciting way.

The riders are given the opportunity to explore their own interests, regardless of ability or ambitions.

Core coaching sessions

Our main coached session is on a Saturday morning 1000-1100 and will generally suit any under 18 who is able to ride a bike, without stabilizers, and who has suitable concentration to listen to instructions. We find this is generally once they have started primary school.

We currently run these sessions at Midmill School in Kintore, as this space offers us a variety of tarmac and grass plus areas of flat and gradients to provide variation and the opportunity to practise a range of core skills.

Full information is available within our coaching manual, and anyone thinking of coming along should read through this, but additional summary information, including an outline of cost, is available by clicking below.

Progression

While our coaching sessions are structured around British Cycling's Go Ride programme, focusing on all cycling disciplines, we aim to provide all riders the opportunity to develop their foundation skills of cycling and then progress to more advanced discipline activities including road, MTB, CX or variations of these.

Riders should be able to join as a relative beginner and progress through our system, into the youth rides and eventually our adult social rides.

We aim to maximise the enjoyment of all our riders through inclusive sessions and while not compulsory, we will support riders and families who wish to go on to represent the club in local and/or national competitions.

Friends made through TEN

While the focus is on riding bikes, it is always a joy to see the kids having fun and making new friends. The support and encouragement during the sessions creates a positive environment and something we always hope will stay with them. This carries through to support at races, enjoying social occasions together or simply creating friendly rivalry during the sessions.

Health and Safety

Our main concern, as well as the riders enjoyment, is that our sessions are conducted in a safe environment.  All our coaches are first aid trained and each session is fully risk assessed.

However, it is the responsibility of the parent/carer to ensure that a riders bike is appropriate and in a safe working condition. In addition, a rider must have a correctly fitting helmet conforming to an appropriate standard and suitable clothing for the conditions.  Riders are also strongly recommended to wear cycling gloves.

A full Bike, Clothing and Helmet check will be undertaken at the beginning of every session and riders with bikes or clothing that are deemed unsafe by coaches will not be allowed to participate in any cycling activities.

All our sessions and activities involving our youths is monitored by our club wellbeing and protection officer. You can find out more about that role in our documentation and on our club officials page.

TEN Youth Turbo

During the winter, we provide an indoor coaching session for youths on turbo trainers and rollers. These are great to maintain and build fitness in a structured manner.

Competition

Not all our riders are interested in racing, but many are and therefore we look to organise our own events and also encourage our youths to enter other local and national events
